Before going to any city, I first reflect on my overall impression of that city. Before coming to Vancouver, my impression was blank, but I knew that the world-renowned Hong Kong actor Leslie Cheung had lived in Vancouver. Every April 1st, his fans place fresh flowers on the bench commemorating him. In 2023, it marked the twentieth anniversary of his suicide. This day holds significant memorial importance in Vancouver and the global Chinese community. However, Vancouver itself might not fully grasp the cultural significance brought by this commemoration. It’s often the case that something is crucial to you, but for the majority of others, it holds no significance.
